About our reindeer hides

Our reindeer hides come from the Swedish part of Lapland. The reindeers are very important for the Sami people. The Samis are indigenous people living in the northern tip of Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Russian Kola peninsula.
Traditionally, the Sami have plied a variety of livelihoods, including coastal fishing, fur trapping, and sheep herding. However, the best known Sami livelihood is semi-nomadic reindeer herding. A lot of Sami. For traditional, environmental, cultural, and political reasons, reindeer herding is legally reserved only for Sami people in certain regions of the Nordic countries.
The reindeers are free to go where they want in the mountains and the forest. During the autumn the reindeers are collected. Some are chosen to be slaughtered. The skin, meat and horn are taken taken care of. They are used for food & handicrafts, so the reindeers place a central role for the Samis.
The hides are well prepared in a tannery. The very best hides are selected for export. These a-grade hides are the ones we sell. The best quality hides are useful in and outside the home, apart from being beautiful. Use them to sit & lay on. A bench, sofa or on the floor in front of the fire place for instance.. (Do not put them in well trafficked areas as its not good for them to be walked at a lot).
You can use them in like they do in Sweden: Hang them on the wall for decoration or use them on the sledges, quadbikes, in the car, or best of all: bring them when you go camping so that you can sit on them around the fire!
The b-grade and halfprepared hides are used locally in Northern Sweden. People use them for anything, as a blanket to sit on, in the car, on their snowmobiles & sledges,
for childen & pets, sitting around a fire on the snow, trekking etc.
