The Real Rug Company Guide to choosing the perfect rug.

A well chosen rug can transform a dull or unwelcoming room in to an exciting and friendly space.

Here are some things to think about when choosing:

  • SIZE - the best thing to do is to put masking tape or something on the floor to mark out where the edges of the rug will be, measure that, then find the rug that comes closest to that size. Here's some ideas to help...

  • Metric – cm's Imperial - ft, inches Description
    60  x 90 2' x 3' Bedside, entry, door way, kitchen or bath sink
    60  x 120 2' x 4'
    70 x 140 2'3" x 4'3" Entry, behind a sofa,
    80 x 150 2'7" x 5'
    100 x 150 3'4" x 5' Under a coffee table, in front or behind a ‘2 seater' sofa
    120 x 180 4' x 6'
    150 x 220 5' x 7'3" Large entry, 2 ½  Seater sofa, 4 seater dining
    170 x 240 5'7" x 8' 3 Seater Sofa – Our most popular size
    180 x 280 6' x 9'3"
    200 x 300 6'6" x 10' Fits a 6 seater dining table with all chairs tucked in
    220 x 330
240 x 340 8' x 11'3" Family Room size, Put your 3 seater sofa and coffee table on the rug on a hard floor – looks great, stop your furniture slipping around
    Assorted Scatter Rug Sizes 70 x 140 ½ circles
    120 cm circles
    180 cm circles
    200 cm circles
    200 cm squares
All these size are available but every rug is never available in every size.  That what makes rugs special.  You'll never know what you'll find on the day.  Be flexible with your options.
Hall Runners From 60 x 220 precut hall runners to continuous 'off the roll' hall runners up to approx. 80 cm wide. Measure your hallway and draw it on a plan with doorways and turns.  Continuous hall runners can be cut and joined to turn corners!

  • COLOUR - Light coloured rugs will make a room feel more spacious, while deeper colours will makea room feel more cozy.

  • TRAFFIC - If your rug is to go in the bedroom or somewhere in the house where only barefoot people go, then the wonderful feeling of a thick flokati or shag rug is unbeatable. If your rug will receive heavy traffic, it is better to go for a heavily patterned one which will require less maintenance.

  • SETTING - In general if you have patterned wallpaper and furnishings then a plainer rug will look better. If you have plain walls and furniture than a more patterned and colourful rug might be better.

  • SPACES - Rugs are a brilliant way of dividing up a room, and defining areas. For example: dining , sofa (coffee table) , work desk , could all be in the same room, and three well chosen rugs will define these areas and make the space feel more organised and useful.

  • FIBRE - Choose wool. It is the best fibre for rugs. Pure wool will not stain (unless you are boiling the stain in).. it wears well and gets softer and better with time. No artificial fibres come close. Silk is nice for rugs with less traffic as the designs can be stunning, but in general choose wool.

  • SHAPE - Usually a rectangular rug is good , but it is worth considering round rugs - especially if you have a round coffee table or a square (rather than rectangular) space where you want a rug.
